Working with Resistance (Apr 2026)

Loading Events

This training is designed to support professionals to develop a deeper, more compassionate understanding of resistance in work with children, young people and families. Rather than viewing resistance as a barrier or lack of cooperation, the workshop reframes it as a meaningful and often protective response shaped by trauma, attachment, power dynamics and previous experiences of services.

Participants will explore how resistance can present in everyday practice, including avoidance, disengagement, hostility or apparent compliance without change. The training supports professionals to strengthen confidence in responding to resistance in ways that preserve relationships, reduce escalation and promote meaningful engagement, particularly within statutory, safeguarding and high-pressure contexts.

This training is suitable for professionals working across social care, education, health and therapeutic services, including social workers, clinicians, family support workers, residential staff and school-based professionals.

What is our Working with Resistance training course?

This in-depth CPD workshop is delivered by a highly qualified clinician with extensive experience in trauma-aware and relational practice. The course has been developed in-house by Gateway Psychology and draws on attachment theory, trauma-aware frameworks and systemic perspectives.

The training provides an in-depth exploration of how resistance develops, how it may present in both subtle and overt ways, and how professional responses and organisational systems can unintentionally increase or reduce resistance.

Participants will explore practical, relationship-based strategies for working collaboratively with resistance, including maintaining curiosity, slowing the pace, offering choice, and supporting engagement without escalation or power struggle.

The course is delivered online via Zoom.
