Parenting with Theraplay®: a group intervention for parents and carers

This intervention brings a small group* of parents together in person with an experienced and qualified Theraplay® Practitioner accredited by Theraplay® UK. The structured intervention focuses on improving and deepening the relationships between parents and their child/children.

About Parenting with Theraplay®

This intervention is a cost-effective way of providing a parent-focused Theraplay® Intervention and has the added benefit of generating self-sustaining parent support. It is also ideal as a preparation for those families who may move onto engagement with a formal Theraplay® Intervention with their children. It is the only parent group intervention to be developed, overseen and accredited by Theraplay® UK. The intervention is suitable for motivated adoptive parents, Special Guardians, foster carers and birth parents.

The intervention includes the following additional resources:

  • Theraplay® workbook and resources
  • Worksheets, exercises and specific activities to use at home

*(minimum group size of 6; maximum group size of 12)

The venue

The group is run at Gateway Psychology: 7-9 The Boulevard, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, ST6 6BD

Tea/coffee and biscuits will be provided but participants will need to bring or buy their own lunch (details of sandwich shops/cafes in the local vicinity can be provided).

Upcoming events

There are four sessions. They are designed to help parents and carers deepen parental understanding and manage difficulties that may arise in the parent-child relationship. With a certified Theraplay® practitioner, parents and carers will work together through the Theraplay® dimensions using the workbook and resources.

This group intervention is aimed at parents and carers. It is particularly beneficial for parents/carers of children who have experienced trauma or early adversity, such as adoptive parents and SGO carers.

Please note that attendance is mandatory for all sessions.

Each session builds upon the knowledge learned from the previous week and it is unfortunately not possible for us to catch up on missed sessions.

This group intervention is offered in-person. However, we do deliver a range of virtual services online – including our training programmes.

Social workers or other professionals are welcome to refer children, young people parents and carers to our group interventions. Please email [email protected] to refer a family. Our Clinical Management Team will contact you for more information, and provide a quotation.

Yes, you are welcome to self-fund a place on our group interventions. Please contact us for more information.
